Security footage recorded in the home of 14-year-old Carly Gregg shows what the teenager did in the moments after allegedly shooting her own mom.
Gregg, who is now 15, is currently on trial on charges relating to the death of her 40-year-old mom, Ashley Smylie, and shooting of her 39-year-old stepfather, Heath Smylie, earlier this year.
The events unfolded at the family’s home in Brandon, Mississippi, on March 19, when Gregg is accused of shooting Ashley and Heath after returning home from school.
Dr. Andrew Clark, a child and adolescent psychiatrist based in Cambridge, MA, spoke at the ongoing trial as an expert witness and diagnosed Carly with Bipolar II disorder.
On the day the shooting took place, Gregg allegedly woke up ‘grumpy and irritable’ and could not concentrate in school.
When she came home from school, she went into the backyard to let her dogs out, but after that Clark claimed her memory ‘went blank’.
“Her memory came back as she was standing by the side of the road, having crawled out of a drainage pipe wet, and the police officer came by and picked her up,” Clark said.
During a cross examination, prosecutor Michael Smith said it was ‘convenient’ that Gregg couldn’t recall the period of time in which her mom died.

As part of the trial, the court saw footage filmed in Gregg’s home after the alleged shooting took place, showing the teenager walking around the home.
In the video, Gregg could be seen sitting on a stool and texting on her phone.
Prosecutors in the case have claimed that Gregg text one of her friends after her mom’s death and asked them to come over due to an ’emergency’.
According to Mississippi state prosecutor Kathryn White Newman, Gregg then answered the door to her friend by asking: “Are you squeamish around dead bodies?”
Newman claimed Gregg then led her friend to the bedroom, where her mom was lying dead on the floor.
Gregg has further been accused of sending a message to her stepfather from her mom’s phone, which read: “Are you almost home, honey?”

On the stand, Heath said there was ‘something about the phrasing’ of the text which suggested to him that Gregg had written it.
He continued: “When I opened the door to the kitchen, the gun went off in my face before the door was even three to four inches wide open, and everything kind of went pretty fast from there. It was a blur.”
Heath got into a struggle with Gregg and managed to get hold of the gun, but he initially believed Gregg had been scared of an intruder.
When he searched the home looking for the supposed intruder, he found Ashley’s dead body with a bloody towel draped over her face.
Gregg attempted to run away after losing possession of the weapon, but she was arrested near the house soon after.

The mother of alleged Georgia school shooter Colt Gray sent chilling text messages shortly before four people were killed at Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County.
On September 4, police were called to the school on reports of an active shooter.
Two 14-year-old pupils – Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo – and two teachers, Christina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall, sadly died in the attack.

A 14-year-old named Colt Gray was arrested on suspicion of the shooting, and is set to be tried as an adult.
A further nine people suffered injuries as a result of the shooting, with CNN reporting that Gray allegedly surrendered after he was confronted by a school resource officer.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith explained that after the teenager was arrested and taken into custody, Gray told investigators ‘I did it’ while being questioned.
Following the fatal attack, harrowing details have emerged about the days and moments leading up to the shooting.

According to The Washington Post, Gray apologized to his mom Marcee in a text message before the shooting, which led to her frantically calling the school.
Charles Polhamus, who is Gray’s maternal grandfather, told The Post that his daughter had been at his house when Gray sent a message.
It allegedly read: “I’m sorry, mom.”
She then rang the school to warn a member of staff of an ‘extreme emergency’, reportedly telling her sister: “I was the one that notified the school counselor at the high school. I told them it was an extreme emergency and for them to go immediately and find [my son] to check on him.”

It was later revealed the teenager had been interviewed back in May 2023 by the FBI, after authorities received anonymous reports someone was making ‘online threats to commit a school shooting at an unidentified location and time’.
Gray was interviewed, alongside his father, the BBC reports, but the teenager denied making the online threats and was subsequently not arrested at the time.
The FBI said in a statement: “The father stated that he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them […] At the time, there was no probable cause for an arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action on the local, state or federal levels.”
Gray’s father, Colin Gray, has now also been arrested ‘in connection to the shooting at Apalachee High School’ and charged with ‘four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children’, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Seven others were injured after being shot, meanwhile a further two students suffered other injuries.
A 14-year-old named Colt Gray was arrested on suspicion of the shooting, and is set to be tried as an adult.
One of Gray’s classmates, Lyela Sayarath, told CNN that the teenager reportedly tried to come into a classroom she was in, when another student noticed he had a gun.
They didn’t open the door – which was locked – with Sayarath claiming he then turned to another class.

“I think he wanted to come to us first,” she said.
Meanwhile, another student, Macey Right, said: “I heard gunshots outside my classroom and people screaming, people begging not to get shot.
“And then people sitting beside me (were) just shaking and crying.”

A group of teenagers made an unexpected and gruesome discovery while creating innocent TikTok content on a beach.
Three teenagers were filming videos on Alki Beach, West Seattle, in 2020 when they spotted a suitcase.
Letting curiosity get the better of them, they proceeded to open the case not knowing what they were about to find and how its contents would lead to a man being sentenced to years in jail.
In the harrowing video that’s still doing the rounds online to this day, one girl climbs down onto a rocky part of the beach to get closer to the suitcase which the person behind the camera said ‘stinks’.
And the smell grew worse when they opened the case up to find something wrapped in what looked to be a black garbage bag.
Unsure whether it was food inside the case that smelt or something more sinister, one group member called the police to have them come check it out.
It was later confirmed that it was in fact human remains inside the suitcase and firefighters went on to find other body parts in more discarded bags in the same area.

Police went on to identify the bodies as being those of Jessica Lewis, 35, and Austin Wenner, 27.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Lewis died from multiple gunshot wounds and Wenner died from a gunshot wound to the torso, said FOX 13.
The chilling video of the teens making the dark discovery went on to be viewed 30 million times, but it was eventually taken down following pressure from relatives of the victims.
It’s unclear if TikTok took it down or if the original poster did, the BBC reported.
After identifying the couple, police later named their landlord, Michael Dudley, as a suspect.
Dudley was eventually charged with two counts of second-degree murder, which he was found guilty of after a jury trial on December 6, 2022.

Prosecutors said Dudley had grown frustrated with the couple over rent payments.
Fast forward to April of last year and the 65-year-old man received a 560 month sentence (over 46 years) and is currently behind bars at Washington State Penitentiary.
Speaking after his sentencing, Jessica Lewis’ aunt said: “I’m just glad we are safer now that man is off the streets and not taking advantage of or hurting and preying on people when down on their luck anymore.”
Dudley’s heinous crimes went on to feature on the second season of Netflix’s Worst Roommate Ever, which was released earlier this year.

CCTV footage shows the moments after a father allegedly murdered his own son.
22-year-old Eric Contreras died after being fatally shot in November 2023, and his father is the person accused of his murder.
David Contreras is facing charges of second-degree murder and was arrested on the day of his son’s death.
The 52-year-old was in court on Thursday (February 22) as he seeks to be released on bond ahead of his trial.
During the proceedings, the 911 call he made following his son’s death was revealed, and broke down in tears hearing it back.
“What did I do?” Contreras was heard saying in the call. “I was fighting with my son… I lost it, he wouldn’t stop.”
Elsewhere, NBC 6 South Florida obtained footage of the moments following Eric’s death.
Taken on a doorbell camera, Contreras’ wife is heard asking if Eric is alive and breathing, to which the dad replies: “He’s not breathing, he’s dead.”
“Why, David? Why?” his wife goes on to ask.
Contreras continued to explain that the arguing between him and his son became ‘unbearable’.

Miami-Dade Corrections
He went on to break down in tears as he asks his wife to find his brother for him.
Police bodycam footage of Contreras’ arrest has also been shared, where the crying father admits to shooting his son.
According to friends of the family, they were all on a trip to Disney World, Orlando, but, as a result of Eric’s behavior, he and his dad drove back home to Kendall.
Their argument then escalated and turned fatal.
Contreras is said to have shot his son multiple times for ‘unknown reasons’ before calling the police. Eric was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s believed that this wasn’t the first time Contreras threatened to shoot Eric.
According to police, in May 2023 he shot at the ceiling and in the days running up to Eric’s death, Contreras had pointed a gun at him.

Family Handout
According to one of Contreras’ attorneys, his son struggled with his mental health.
“This is just a very tragic situation. He is distraught,” he said of his client, as per NBC 6.
“The victim is the son of the defendant, and the victim has suffered from some severe emotional and mental conditions, and we’re still trying to determine what happened, why it happened.”
The 52-year-old entered a not guilty plea back in November, and he’s since been held without bond.
Reportedly, prosecutors want Contreras to stay in jail, but his attorneys hope he can go home to await trail.
But a judge ruled that he would continue to be held without bond until his next court appearance – which is set for March 11, according to court records.
